Eggplant Bharta- Mirchi Desi Recipes

Made with fresh spices and eggplant, it is a common yet one of the most delicious recipes made in South Asian households.

Serves 2 people



  •  eggplant
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
  • 2 fresh hot green chillies
  •  fresh tomatoes, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon  salt or to taste
  • ½ cup chopped cilantro, thin stems included
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala


The Recipe

First, grill the eggplant till it gets blackened and the skin collapses

After that, trim away the hard stem after it cools down, then chop and mash it with lime juice

Then, heat oil in a pan, add chopped onions. Sautee them till they turn brown. Do this for about out 10 minutes.

 Then add the garlic and chillies. Cook for 2-3 mins.

After that,  add the chopped tomato, along with turmeric and salt. Cook until the tomato has softened

Cook the mashed eggplant garam masala and turn off the heat.

Serve hot with warm chapati bread or pita, or over rice.
